What’s a dental implant?

Dental implants are titanium screws inserted in the patient’s jaw to replace a missing tooth. The implants replace the root of the natural tooth and serve as the anchor or base that supports crowns, bridges or dental prostheses. They are a superior modern dental medicine solution that lasts a lifetime.

What are the most common reasons for getting implants?

Dental implants preserve natural tooth tissue by avoiding the need to cut down adjacent teeth for conventional bridgework. They also will preserve bone and significantly reduce bone resorption and deterioration that results in loss of jawbone height.

How old do you have to be for a dental implant?

The earliest a person can get dental implants is age 18, but even then we have to note that 18 may be too young. Even at age 18, a patient may still be maturing, meaning the jaw may continue to grow and change.

Does the implant procedure hurt?

A straightforward dental implant, for a patient with good bones and who does not need a lot of soft tissue surgery, has a pain level between two and three in the first 24 to 48 hours, which means over-the-counter medication like Tylenol or Advil will take care of any discomfort they are feeling.

How long do implants last?

Dental implants are designed to be a permanent solution to tooth loss and they can last between 20 and 30 years. However, their lifespan depends entirely on how well you look after your teeth and your oral hygiene.

Dental implants consist of a titanium ‘root’ which is embedded in your jawbone to replicate the root section of a natural tooth. A ceramic dental crown is placed on top of the implant to replace the tooth itself. To ensure their functionality and longevity they need to be looked after just as a natural tooth would, which means daily cleaning and flossing and regular visits to a dentist and hygienist.

Which implants do you use at your Dental Centre?

We use implants of the best brands in Europe which guarantee the best quality and safety for our patients.

Is it possible to have the implant procedure done immediately after tooth extraction?

An implant can be placed right after an extraction if you have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density. Once the tooth has been removed, your dentist can immediately insert the titanium post into your jaw

What’s the number one choice of patients witouth teeth for dental treatments using implantology?

If you have one or more missing teeth, you have options to fill the gaps. Traditional bridges and dentures may do the trick, but they’re not right for everyone. Because of discomfort, soreness, poor mouth structure, or other reasons, you may need a different dental restoration choice.

Dental Implants are the best choice in replacing missing teeth because they do not affect the other teeth as traditional bridges do.  With traditional bridges, the teeth adjacent to the empty space are ground down in order to attach the fake tooth. Dental implants may be the best choice for replacing missing teeth instead of bridges and dentures or when ordinary bridges and dentures don’t work. Implants also protect your jawbone — something bridges and dentures can’t do.

Will I be able to function normally between the two phases of the implant procedure?

Implants can be placed either using a one stage or a two stage surgical technique, and as their names suggests, one is performed in one step while the other requires a second surgery.

With a one-stage procedure, a healing abutment is placed at the time of surgery. An abutment is a connector that attaches the implant from the bone into the mouth and which protrudes through the gum tissues. Following a 3 to 6 month healing period in which the implant fuses to the bone, a crown is then placed on the implant restoring the immediate appearance of a healthy, normal tooth. One-stage implant systems are generally used when the bone quality is good, guaranteeing good initial implant stability. They are also used when cosmetics is not a concern, such as the back areas of the mouth.

Under special conditions an implant can be placed and a crown placed on top of it at the same time. However, this is a very special circumstance requiring ideal conditions and surgical experience as well as crown fabrication know-how. It is generally safer and wiser not to subject an implant to biting forces until it is fully healed and integrated with the supporting bone.

two-stage procedure is typically used for replacing teeth where there is no immediate need for a cosmetic solution and when more of a margin of safety is required. With this approach, the implant(s) are placed into the jawbone and the gum tissues cover them. They are not exposed to the mouth, but stay buried and left to heal. Once healed, a second surgery is performed to attach an abutment for securing the crown in place. This approach is used when there is poorer bone quality or quantity. This may make it necessary to regenerate bone around the implant at the time of its placement. There may also be other health considerations dictating that a two-stage approach may be indicated.
